As with any tragic event that involves the pain, suffering, and death of innocent people, my heart and prayers go out to those affected by today’s events. Once again, we are reminded that there are monsters out there and when and where they strike is the big unknown. Well, almost…. I don’t want to jump to conclusions about todays events, but we know that a place of worship was attacked by a goblin (in the words of Col. Jeff Cooper). Places of worship, along with schools, government buildings, and others are many times posted as a “gun free zone.” I ask you the same question that I asked my 4 your old today. Is a bad guy intent on hurting someone going to simply stop when they see a sign that tells them that they can’t have guns there? Heck no, in fact you see a lot of mass shootings that take place at these locations for just that reason. Gun free zones= target rich environments. Now, I don’t pretend to know anything about the Sikhs religion. In fact, I learned most of what I know about it in the last few minutes. But this excerpt from Wikipedia about their religion has me wondering.
“Sikhs are expected to embody the qualities of a “Sant-Sipāhī”—a saint-soldier. One must have control over one’s internal vices and be able to be constantly immersed in virtues clarified in the Guru Granth Sahib. A Sikh must also have the courage to defend the rights of all who are wrongfully oppressed or persecuted irrespective of religion, colour, caste or creed.”
It sounds as if they would be encouraged to be ready to defend against such crimes by their religion. I am curious if their temple is a posted gun free zone. If that is the case, I would hope that in the future it is no longer posted as such, they are encouraged to carry a concealed weapon, and could prevent another event such as this. People need to understand that the cops are not your personal bodyguards, only an individual can be responsible for their own protection. My hope is that this country can get to a point where there are no gun free zones, carrying concealed is encouraged, and the goblins live in fear of every citizen that they would prey upon.
